Top Lessons Learned from Our Spring Internship

Written by Spring 2025 interns: Lucy Dillon and Katie Pottinger

What a semester! Time flies when you’re having fun — and even more so when you’re driving meaningful change.

From social media management to media pitching and client relations, our time at Jarel Communications has been filled with growth and excitement. Here are the top lessons we’ve learned during our internship:

Mastering the Art of Media Pitching Lucy: A major milestone for me was working on my first media pitch. Securing media coverage and seeing the pitch come to life was truly fulfilling. Media relations extends beyond simply securing a placement — it aims to help real people and shed light on topics that might otherwise remain in the dark. Still, I will never forget watching my first story on air!

Harnessing the Power of Social Media Engagement Katie: One of the highlights of my internship was supporting the management of social media content and engaging with audiences for a major brand. This was my first experience working with a large, active following, and it was both intimidating and exciting. Creating posts and planning content improved my skills in understanding what resonates with audiences and how to keep them engaged.

Building Lasting Client Relationships. Lucy: This is an area where I grew immensely this semester. By maintaining clear and frequent communication, ensuring you’re aligned with your clients, and connecting regularly to achieve the best outcomes for the team, you can foster positive relationships with clients.

Embracing the Power of Social Good Katie: One meaningful lesson I’ve taken away from this internship is that business and social good don’t have to exist separately; they can and should work together. It was powerful to learn about and share resources that can make a real difference in the lives of people in our community, especially those in underserved areas. Knowing that my work could help others made each assignment feel personal and purposeful. Being part of that mission inspired me to continue making social good a part of my future career.

All in all, it shaped up to be quite a productive spring!

This internship has helped us grow both professionally and personally, and we look forward to applying the knowledge we’ve gained in the future. A huge thank you to everyone who guided and supported us throughout this experience!
